Using Superannuation for Essential Dental Care

For many Australians, the cost of essential dental treatment can feel overwhelming – particularly when multiple procedures are required to address chronic pain or serious oral health conditions. The compassionate release of super is a pathway available through the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) that may allow eligible patients to access their superannuation early to cover the costs of necessary dental care.

At Exquisite Smiles, we are proud to partner with SuperCare, an Australian company that specialises in supporting patients through this process.

What Is the Compassionate Release of Super?

Under the ATO’s compassionate grounds scheme, Australians may be able to access their superannuation before retirement age to pay for essential medical or dental treatment: for themselves or a dependant, such as a spouse, partner, or child. This pathway is available in strictly limited circumstances and is intended as a last resort, after other payment options have been considered.

To be eligible to access super for dental, the treatment must generally meet the following criteria:

  • The dental treatment is medically necessary to alleviate acute or chronic pain, treat a life-threatening condition, or address a significant impairment to health and function.
  • The treatment is not readily available through the public health system, or the waiting time is unreasonably long.
  • You are unable to pay for the treatment through savings, income, private health insurance, or other available means.
  • Two separate medical reports are required – typically from your treating dentist and either a second dental practitioner (one of whom must be a specialist) or a GP – certifying the necessity of the treatment.

Applications are submitted online through your myGov account, linked to the ATO’s online services, and are assessed on a case-by-case basis. The ATO does not charge a fee to process your application, though third-party assistance providers may charge a fee if they are a registered tax agent.

How SuperCare Can Help

Navigating the compassionate release of super application process can be time-consuming and complex. SuperCare is a dedicated Australian service that assists patients in preparing and lodging their ATO applications, ensuring all required documentation is in order and the process is as smooth as possible. Their team guides you through every step, and they operate on a no-win, no-fee policy. If your application is not approved, you receive your fee back.

SuperCare is not a superannuation fund or financial services company. It is a professional support service that helps eligible patients access their own savings to cover approved dental expenses. Patients retain full control of their myGov account throughout the process.

Important Considerations

Accessing your super early has long-term implications for your retirement savings. We always encourage patients to seek independent financial advice and explore all available payment options before proceeding. Dr Rajeev Bhandare and our team are committed to transparent, ethical care – we will only recommend treatment that is genuinely in your best interests.
