To be eligible to access super for dental, the treatment must generally meet the following criteria:
- The dental treatment is medically necessary to alleviate acute or chronic pain, treat a life-threatening condition, or address a significant impairment to health and function.
- The treatment is not readily available through the public health system, or the waiting time is unreasonably long.
- You are unable to pay for the treatment through savings, income, private health insurance, or other available means.
- Two separate medical reports are required – typically from your treating dentist and either a second dental practitioner (one of whom must be a specialist) or a GP – certifying the necessity of the treatment.
Applications are submitted online through your myGov account, linked to the ATO’s online services, and are assessed on a case-by-case basis. The ATO does not charge a fee to process your application, though third-party assistance providers may charge a fee if they are a registered tax agent.
